Help with Unfould
Most of what people ask about is below. If your answer isn’t here, write to us — a person reads every message, and it’s usually the fastest way through.

Tell us your device, your iOS version, and what you expected to happen. If it involves an entry, please don’t paste what you wrote — we don’t need to read it to help.
Getting started
Open the app and write. There is nothing to configure first, no prompt you have to answer, and no minimum length — one sentence is a complete entry.
Everything saves as you type. There is no Save button in the editor because there does not need to be one: the entry is written to your device as you go, and reaches your account afterwards.
- Type it. The editor is the whole screen. Tap the plus to add a photograph or a voice memo inside the entry.
- Speak it. Dictation turns speech into writing. A voice memo keeps your actual voice instead.
- Photograph it. A handwritten page can be photographed straight into an entry.
Account and signing in
You can sign in with an email address and password, with Apple, or with Google. Your journal follows the account, so signing in on a new phone brings your entries with it.
I forgot my password.
On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot password? and enter your email. We send a six-digit code — not a link — so you can read it on a laptop and type it on your phone.
- Enter the email you signed up with.
- Open the email and note the six-digit code.
- Type the code and choose a new password. You’re signed in as soon as it’s set.
The code expires after an hour. If it does, ask for a new one from the same screen.
The reset email hasn't arrived.
Check spam first — that is where it usually is. Note that a reset is only sent to an address that has an account, and that there is a short wait between requests, so tapping repeatedly will not make one arrive sooner.
If you originally signed up with Apple or Google, there is no password to reset. Sign in the same way you did the first time.
How do I change my password?
You → Security → Change password.You’ll be asked for your current password first. If you signed up with Apple or Google the row is not shown, because those accounts have no password of ours to change.
Can I use Unfould on more than one device?
Yes. Sign in with the same account and your entries, reflections, photographs and recordings sync across them. The journal on each device is a full copy, so it keeps working with no connection.
Reflections and questions
After an entry, Unfould can write a reflection — what you actually said, in your own words — and ask one question drawn from it. You can answer the question by typing, by recording a voice note, or both.
An answer can be revisited. Open the reflection again to edit what you wrote or add a recording to a reply you had only typed.
Where does the reflection get written?
On supported hardware it can run on your device, and your writing never leaves the phone. Otherwise, and only if you allow it, the entry is sent to OpenAI to compose the reflection. The choice is yours and you can change it at any time. See the privacy policy for what that means in practice.
I don't want a question back.
Turn reflections off for a single entry, or off entirely. Nothing is sent anywhere for a reflection you did not ask for, and the app is a perfectly good place to write without them.
What is Journal Memory?
Reflections can quietly draw on your past entries so a question lands in context rather than out of nowhere. You can clear that remembered context whenever you like — You → Journal Memory → Clear Journal Memory. Your entries themselves are untouched.
Voice notes and photos
A voice memo keeps your voice as a recording inside the entry. Dictation is the other thing — it turns speech into text and keeps no audio. Both are available from the plus button in the editor.
Recordings and photographs are stored on your device and copied to your account, and play or open offline once they are on the phone.
A recording won't play.
If it was made on another device it has to download first — that needs a connection the first time, and after that it plays offline. Check the volume and the silent switch, and make sure no other app is holding the audio session.
Can I record a long entry?
Recordings have a length cap so a single file cannot grow unbounded. If you hit it, the recording stops cleanly and keeps what you said — nothing is lost.
Privacy and locks
There are two separate locks, and it is worth knowing which is which.
- App Lock covers the whole app on one device with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. It is about the phone in your hand, not your account. You → Security → App Lock.
- Locking one entry hides that entry behind the same check. It is kept out of search and out of exports, and shows only its title and date until you unlock it.
Being straight about the limit: a locked entry is not separately encrypted. The lock keeps other people out of your phone — it is not built to withstand someone extracting the device’s storage.
Subscription and billing
Writing and reading entries is free and stays free. Reflections, voice, photographs, and Journal Memory are part of Unfould Pro: 7 days free, then $59.99 USD per year. Current plans are always shown in the app before you buy.
How do I cancel?
Through the App Store, because that is who bills you — Apple does not let an app cancel on your behalf. Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Unfould → Cancel. You keep access until the period you have paid for ends.
You can also reach the same controls from You → Plan inside the app.
I paid but Unfould says I'm on the free plan.
Tap You → Restore purchase. That asks the App Store what you own and re-applies it. Make sure you are signed into the same Apple Account that made the purchase — a subscription belongs to that account, not to the device.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple rather than by us. Use reportaproblem.apple.com. If something we did caused the problem, write to us as well and we will back you up.
What happens to my entries if I stop paying?
They stay yours. Writing, reading, searching and exporting keep working — the paid features simply stop being available. Nothing is deleted for not subscribing.
Exporting and deleting
How do I get my writing out?
You → Export your entries. It produces a copy of everything you have written that you can save or send wherever you like. Do this before deleting anything you might want later.
How do I delete my account?
You → Delete account. Before anything happens you are shown exactly what will be removed — how many entries, reflections, and recordings — and offered two gentler options: export your writing, or simply sign out and leave everything as it is.
Deletion is immediate and permanent. Entries, reflections, photographs, recordings and the account itself are removed, and we keep no copy to restore from. We ask why you are leaving, but answering is optional and skipping it changes nothing.
Can I delete a single entry?
Yes — open it and delete it from the menu. Its photographs and recordings go with it.
Something isn't working
My entries aren't syncing.
Your writing is safe regardless — the copy on your device is the real one, and syncing is what carries it to your account afterwards. Check you are signed in and have a connection. If something failed to upload, You → Backup shows it and offers to try again.
An entry is missing.
Check whether it is locked — locked entries are deliberately kept out of search results. If it was written on another device, make sure that device has been online since you wrote it.
A reflection failed to generate.
Reflections need a connection unless yours run on-device. Try again from the entry. If it keeps failing, tell us what the entry looked like in general terms — how long it was, whether it had a recording — rather than sending the text.
Notifications aren't arriving.
Check You → Reminders is on, then iOS Settings → Unfould → Notifications. Reminders are an invitation to write, never a nudge about a streak.
Devices and requirements
Unfould runs on iPhone and iPad. There is no web app and no Android version at the moment.
Some features depend on the device: on-device reflections need supported hardware, and Face ID or Touch ID depends on what your phone has. Where the hardware isn’t there, the app falls back to a passcode or to the cloud rather than hiding the feature.
